I was born in Wichita, Kansas, but grew up in Indiana and especially the Chicago area. I am the oldest of eight children, three of which are adopted. My parents homeschooled us with an emphasis on curiosity, serving others, cultivating a global vision and above all doing all things for God’s glory. I completed my undergrad training at The Master’s College (now University) in southern California. It was here that I met my lovely wife and we were married a few weeks after graduation.
My interest in Family Medicine blossomed during the summer between my 1st and 2nd at University of Iowa. I spent several weeks at a small hospital in rural northwest Iowa. I fell in love with “big doctoring” – where the same physician would do inpatient rounds in the morning, see clinic patients, deliver a baby just before lunch and then staff the ER in the late afternoon. It is an amazing privilege to walk with families from the cradle to the grave. Long term, I plan to practice full scope family medicine in a rural setting. My wife and I also have a desire to work overseas and are considering long-term opportunities in this regard. I am excited to be spending this additional year at Memorial to further hone my surgical skills as part of the OB fellowship.
Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two loveable foster daughters (one of which we recently adopted!). I have way too many hobbies and interests. Chief among these is birding. As of August 2020 I have seen 607 species in the US and Canada out of the 700 or so that regularly occur here. I contribute my sightings to eBird and other projects. I would love to take you to the nearest park, mountaintop or waste water facility and show you around. I also enjoy landscape photography, camping, road trips, gardening (especially heirloom vegetables), cooking, trying new foods, being a coffee snob, coin collecting, plane-spotting, amateur astronomy and tackling home and auto repairs.
