Hometown: Pemberville, OH
Bio: I grew up in a small farming town in Ohio called Pemberville. I then attended John Carroll University for my bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in public health, followed by medical school at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, where I found my passion for family medicine. I love being able to educate and empower patients about their health and to accompany patients through every stage of life. With my interest in working with underserved populations, I also felt family medicine would provide me with the broadest skill set possible so that I could meet the needs of whatever community I worked in. Finally, I enjoy the variety family medicine offers with regards to patient population, the problems we manage, and the spectrum of clinical skills we can utilize.
Why Memorial for HSM fellowship: I selected Memorial as my first choice of residency because I was looking for an unopposed program that would challenge me enough to prepare me for rural, full scope practice, but also provide support and a family-like atmosphere. Memorial has absolutely met these expectations, so much that I will be staying for a fourth year as a fellow on the health services management track. I hope to use this additional training to take on leadership roles in community outreach and public health in my health system and community.
Clinical interests: Primary and preventive care, inpatient care (especially caring for my own primary care panel when they are admitted to the hospital), reproductive care including contraception and prenatal care, community outreach and public health
Hobbies: Hiking, fishing, paddle sports, cooking, playing guitar, yoga, ukulele, and piano (poorly), and singing
Favorite books: I love to read, but my favorites that I always return to are children’s fantasy books, particularly the Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia series. I’m currently reading through Lord of the Rings for the first time and enjoying it. In terms of more grown up stuff, Tattoos on the Heart by Fr. Gregory Boyle is a book written by a Jesuit priest who works with gang members in Los Angeles, and I often re-read it when I’m dealing with burn out and compassion fatigue. My favorite fiction book is The Poisonwood Bible and I also really enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sing recently.
Favorite thing to do/place to go in South Bend/Mishawaka: Rum Village is a city park near my house with great walking trails, some fun geocaches, high ropes and disc golf courses, and a nice little dog park that my parents’ dog loves to visit when they’re in town!
