Our physician residency programs provide a broad curriculum and varied experiences for students. At Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in South Bend, Indiana, and Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) in Kalamazoo, Michigan, faculty and staff provide guidance and facilitate training opportunities for all.
Residents work and learn at our teaching hospitals in South Bend and Kalamazoo. They also have opportunities to work at medical sites in local communities and even internationally.
With the support of Memorial Hospital and Beacon Health System, the program has 30 residents who provide compassionate care for the most vulnerable in our community in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
In addition, the residency program offers three fellowship options for residents who want to expand their training: Sports Medicine, Obstetrics and a unique Health Service Management fellowship that offers a longitudinally integrated master’s degree in public Affairs from Indiana University.
The faculty, residents, administrative and support staff are committed to the program’s values of providing excellent education for family medicine residents, high-quality patient care, advancing the specialty of family medicine and serving our community.
Ascension Borgess Hospital, Bronson Healthcare and Western Michigan University collaborated in the incorporation of the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) in 2011. The roots of medical education at both hospitals, however, trace back to the late 1940s.
Today, WMed has more than 240 residents and fellows. The school of medicine offers residency programs in emergency medicine, family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, medicine-pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics and psychiatry. WMed also offers fellowships in EMS, forensic pathology, hospice and palliative medicine, simulation and sports medicine.
Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
Providing a large amount of hands-on interventional training, this one-year program is designed to be the fourth year of invasive and interventional cardiology instruction. It covers training in such areas as peripheral vascular interventions, Angiojet thrombectomy, and acute MI management and interventions. Fully accredited by American Counsel for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and affiliated with Michigan State University, the program offers three interventional cardiology positions per year (July 1 – June 30). The fellowship is designed as advanced training for fellows who completed their training at an accredited three-year cardiology fellowship program in the United States or abroad.
Pharmacy Residency Program
Building from the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education, this one-year pharmacy residency program prepares residents to be a member of a healthcare team. By integrating the pharmacy resident into the medication use process, they learn about clinical, distribution and administrative aspects of their profession. With a focus on preparing to be accountable and responsible for achieving optimal outcomes from prescribed drug therapies, the resident transitions to being an engaged professional and committed to their professional growth. The program also expands presentation, teaching, evaluation and research skills of each resident.
