The Importance of Diversity
At Beacon Health System, the specialty of family medicine is highly valued and recognized as playing a vital role within the health and well-being of our community. We believe this is best accomplished with a diverse group of providers, who bring differing perspectives, lived experiences, and expertise to this practice setting. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values of our health system and central to our mission as an organization. Further, we recognize that having diversity within our training program improves the quality of care for patients as well as the educational opportunities for all learners. Thus, we have made it a central mission within our family medicine residency to encourage medical students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) to rotate with our program. This scholarship program provides financial assistance for fourth year medical students planning careers in family medicine that have faced significant socioeconomic disadvantage as well as individualized mentorship to ensure success.
Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency
As our healthcare system continues to evolve, there is no question that our specialty will remain pivotal in addressing the healthcare needs of our country. The Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency is an unopposed program that allows medical students ample hands-on experience with rich learning opportunities across multiple inpatient and outpatient services. As the winner of the 2018 ACGME Baldwin Award, we have demonstrated our strong commitment to education as well as building a respectful and supportive learning environment. Medical students who rotate with us develop an understanding and appreciation of full-spectrum family medicine, while having ample opportunity to assume diagnostic and therapeutic responsibilities of problems commonly managed by family physicians. Further, direct mentorship from faculty, residents, and community providers allows residents to not only contextualize their education, but also to reflect on their unique experiences within healthcare as a member of the URiM community.
