John McCarthy, MD

College: University of Notre Dame
Medical School: Creighton University School of Medicine

Hometown: Spokane, WA

Bio: Although I claim Spokane, WA as my hometown, I also claim to be a Midwesterner at heart. I was born in Ohio, baptized in Michigan, went to college in Indiana, married my beautiful wife in Illinois, attended medical school in Nebraska, and had a beautiful daughter while living in Iowa. Between all this moving around, I double majored in pre-professional studies and theology and earned my Master of Education teaching middle school in Corpus Christi, TX for two years. In medical school I fell in love with family medicine for the scope of practice and range of patients I would get

Why Memorial: Memorial was my very first residency interview, and everyone told me that they loved the program and the people; that it was a special place. While the robust full-scope training was impressive, the thing that stuck out most to me was the mentorship. Both fellow residents and faculty were people that I would both love to work with and strive to emulate as physician. They were passionate about their work, compassionate with patients, and encouraging everyone to be their authentic selves because it makes for well-rounded team and uplifting family!

Clinical interests: Full-scope family medicine with obstetrics. Fertility Awareness and Restorative Reproductive Medicine

Hobbies: Spending time with family, backpacking, basketball, golf, skiing/snowboarding, building bonfires, a good book, learning guitar, cheering on the Fighting Irish, and being an active church parishioner

Favorite quotes: “The problem with the world is that we draw the circle of our family too small.” – Mother Teresa,  “Reading has made many saints.” – St. Josemaria Escrivá

Favorite books: The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, The Alchemist, The Imitation of Christ, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World

Best advice: Your life is not about you.

Favorite thing to do in South Bend/Mishawaka:  Walking on the River Walk and around Notre Dame’s campus, iceskating at Howard Park, and getting dark chocolate hot chocolate at South Bend Chocolate Company (makes a great first date)
