Palliative Care/Hospice

Building off of a popular elective, residents in the geriatric track will have early exposure to palliative care as well as hospice care, in their intern year. While palliative care/hospice is applicable to all age ranges, the majority of patients meet the definition of older adult. This block would ideally feature time on an inpatient palliative care service, outpatient palliative care clinic, and inpatient hospice unit and outpatient hospice program. The goal would be for new interns to quickly become comfortable with goals of care and end-of-life conversations. Early exposure will empower residents to lead family discussions more effectively during their inpatient and outpatient clinic experiences, which is essential for family physicians caring for older adults.
