At the completion of this block, the resident will have developed an understanding of:
- A systems approach to quality management
- How to maintain an ongoing environment of quality and process improvement
- Importance of teamwork in quality management
- Customer satisfaction and customer experience
- How physician work quality is measured and strategies to improve performance
- How health systems evaluate employee efficiency
- What is “root cause analysis”?
Residents should ideally:
- Meet with those working in Beacon Health System engaged in QM/PI activities
- Meet with those working in Beacon Medical Group engaged in QM/PI activities
- Meet with someone at Press-Ganey about “measurement”
- Engage with any active Lean 6 Sigma or Kaizen activities at Memorial Hospital
- Meet with C-suite level individuals about the importance of quality improvement activities within health systems
- Attend a Quality Committee meeting (at multiple levels in the organization) if possible
- As appropriate, meet with those outside of Beacon doing similar things in their organization
- Meet or talk with individuals in organizations that they foresee themselves working with in their early career
- Discuss this topic with regional or national leaders in this field as they may be available through faculty or resident connections
- Do any assigned directed reading
