Quality Management and Process Improvement

At the completion of this block, the resident will have developed an understanding of:

  • A systems approach to quality management
  • How to maintain an ongoing environment of quality and process improvement
  • Importance of teamwork in quality management
  • Customer satisfaction and customer experience
  • How physician work quality is measured and strategies to improve performance
  • How health systems evaluate employee efficiency
  • What is “root cause analysis”?

Residents should ideally:

  • Meet with those working in Beacon Health System engaged in QM/PI activities
  • Meet with those working in Beacon Medical Group engaged in QM/PI activities
  • Meet with someone at Press-Ganey about “measurement”
  • Engage with any active Lean 6 Sigma or Kaizen activities at Memorial Hospital
  • Meet with C-suite level individuals about the importance of quality improvement activities within health systems
  • Attend a Quality Committee meeting (at multiple levels in the organization) if possible
  • As appropriate, meet with those outside of Beacon doing similar things in their organization
  • Meet or talk with individuals in organizations that they foresee themselves working with in their early career
  • Discuss this topic with regional or national leaders in this field as they may be available through faculty or resident connections
  • Do any assigned directed reading
