Katharine Callaghan, MD

Health Services Management Fellow
Residency: Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program

My name is Kate Callaghan. I grew up in Iowa City, IA and originally came to South Bend to attend the University of Notre Dame as an undergraduate. During that time, I was given the great gift of majoring in theology, and I also got my first tastes of the incredible community in South Bend. Having fallen in love with the city and its people, I stayed after graduation to do a year of service with Young Life Michiana and the St. Peter Claver Catholic Worker. I then headed south to Vanderbilt University for medical school where I got exposed to the beauty of bluegrass music and an amazing group of faculty and classmates who understand their work in healthcare as not merely a job, but a vocation. During medical school, I saw repeatedly that relationships were my most powerful motivation for learning, and by the end of my third year, it was clear that family medicine was the best fit for me in terms of specialty choice. I had the opportunity to spend a week at Memorial near the end of my third year, and I was extremely impressed with the residents’ care of complex patients as well as their procedural competence. Further, I’m interested in providing care to underserved populations, particularly the underserved of South Bend, and the underserved and health services management (HSM) curricula the program offers have been a great fit for my interests.

Having completed residency here and now moving into my HSM fellowship year, I can say unreservedly that I would choose this program again without hesitation. As a full-spectrum program, Memorial has given me tremendous experience managing complex disease processes in the hospital and the clinic. It has provided extensive procedural opportunities and access to not only a stellar faculty, but also thoughtful and kind specialists who have viewed me as a valued member of the care team. Best of all, it has gifted me truly extraordinary relationships, through the continuity I’m able to have with my patient panel, through a faculty whose doors are literally and figuratively always open (day or night), and through amazing residents who every day inspire me to be a better doctor and a better person.

When I have free time, I like to spend it in conversation with friends while enjoying good food, good music, or the beauty of creation (some of my favorite spots in/near South Bend are St. Patrick’s Park, Notre Dame’s lakes, and St. Joseph, MI). I’m delighted to be living and working in South Bend (and intend to continue doing that long into the future), and I count myself deeply blessed to get to spend one more year as a fellow finishing up my training and getting to do some teaching at Memorial.
